The project has developed an intensive five week summer program conducted by the University of South Australia and the International Space University. It provides inter-disciplinary knowledge and skills to professionals, graduate researchers and senior undergraduate students, leading to a graduate qualification or credit towards undergraduate programs.

The program is available to Australian and international students over three summers and will teach the key concepts and latest developments in:

  • space science and technology
  • space applications
  • space business
  • international and national space policy
  • legal and regulatory issues
  • space life sciences.

The 2011 program was taught by a team of over 30 faculty and staff from 10 countries, from international space agencies, academia, aerospace companies, consultancies and government. 43 students from nine countries graduated. The students worked over five weeks to produce a White Paper, Paths to Progress: Space and the Southern Hemisphere, to inspire commitment and further the case of space within the Southern Hemisphere. The program also included evening events attended by the public such as an astronaut panel, a panel on space education in the southern hemisphere and a panel on current status and future directions of Australia’s space program.

The dates for the next program are 9 January to 11 February 2012. Enrolments close on 30 November 2011. There are a limited number of scholarships available for students not sponsored by employers. For online enrolment, go to the Southern Hemisphere Summer Space Program website.

Further information on the program can be found at the University of South Australia website.
