This is not a typical photo of Cape Town, South Africa. First of all, the Landsat satellite took a satellite photo of Cape Town from its orbit around Earth. Then, as part of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, data of the land's topography (height and shape) was gathered.
By combining the data from both missions, computer scientists were then able to generate an image of the scene from almost any angle. It's like being able to take a photo of something without having a camera in the right place - and that's what makes this image so special!
Similar techniques might be used more widely in the future to create images like this of faraway planets without having to get close to the ground.
