The Australian Space Agency has opened consultation on updates to the Australian Flight Safety Code (FSC).

The FSC underpins the nation’s space safety framework — the Space (Launches and Returns) Act 2018.

The Agency plans to release two versions of the FSC over the next 12 months. They will reflect feedback received from the Australian space sector as well as insights gained by the Agency on how to apply the current version of the FSC to various space activities.

The first version will make immediate enhancements to the FSC, including:

  • enhancing clarity by adding definitions or explanations of terminology
  • updating Flight Safety System standards to align with global practice
  • adding launch and return collision avoidance requirements to reflect industry practice
  • changes to the critical assets process and definition.

The subsequent version aims to further improve the FSC, addressing aircraft and maritime risk and other matters raised by the sector during the current consultation.

Upcoming public information session

The Agency's Office of the Space Regulator (OSR) works closely with the Australian space sector and other regulators to meet the needs of our rapidly evolving sector.

One of our key goals is to ensure meaningful and relevant opportunities for the sector to inform continuous improvement processes.

On Monday 15 September, OSR has organised an online public information session about the proposed updates to the Code and to take any questions from the sector.

Our department recognises the First Peoples of this Nation and their ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to the lands, waters, seas, skies, and communities.

We Acknowledge First Nations Peoples as the Traditional Custodians and Lore Keepers of the oldest living culture and pay respects to their Elders past and present. We extend that respect to all First Nations Peoples.
