To support its Statement on Space, the Australian Government has also issued a Statement of Expectations to the Australian Space Agency.
It recognises the important role the Agency has played in advancing Australia’s space sector and outlines expectations to continue advancing government objectives through its five core functions:
- Lead and coordinate space policy across government to ensure a coherent approach.
- Shape and grow Australian space capability for the benefit of the nation.
- Lead international civil space partnerships to create opportunities for Australia and support its foreign policy objectives.
- Promote a responsible space sector through guidance and regulation.
- Advance understanding of the contribution of space to a productive, resilient, and sustainable Australia and inspire the next generation science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce through space.
The downloadable resource set the expectations for the Agency’s regulatory function and highlights three priority areas:
- increased cadence in regulatory authorisations
- modernising the regulatory framework for emerging activities
- space monitoring and sustainability.
